What to see in Pollensa?

The Calvary of Pollença, Majorca, Spain

The Calvari of Pollensa

El Calvario or Calvari, in Mallorcan, is the most emblematic place in Pollença, a municipality located in the northeast of Mallorca. El Calvari is a hill made up of a stairway made up of 365 steps, one for each day of the year, flanked by cypresses and fourteen three-meter-high Christian crosses, recalling the suffering (calvary) of Jesus Christ while climbing Mount Golgotha where, according to Christian tradition, he was crucified. Climbing all the steps, you will reach the top of the mountain where the small church of El Calvari and the viewpoint with the best panoramic views of Pollença are located. One of the jewels inside the small hermitage is the 14th-century sculptural image of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary at his feet, which, according to legend, was found in Cala Sant Vicenç, a famous cove in Pollença.Mount Calvary is very important for the inhabitants of Pollença who, in memory of the Calvary of Jesus Christ, every Good Friday celebrate the "Davallament" (detachment from the cross), one of the acts most important and recognized of the Mallorcan Holy Week. This act consists of lowering a carving of Christ of great historical value from the cross and carrying it in procession up the tortuous staircase to the Church of the Virgen de los Ángeles, patron saint of Pollença. This ritual is carried out with strict respect, in complete silence and illuminated only by the light of the torches that the brothers carry with them.
