La Spezia is an Italian city in the Liguria region, capital of the province of the same name. It has a population of about 95 thousand inhabitants and is located in the Gulf of La Spezia, also called the Gulf of Poets due to the presence of important writers such as Shelley and Byron. La Spezia is a modern city, with an important commercial and military port, and a starting point to visit the famous Cinque Terre, a group of five picturesque towns on the coast. Some of the tourist attractions of La Spezia are the Amedeo Lia Civic Museum, which houses a valuable collection of religious and secular art; the Medieval Castle of San Giorgio, which offers a panoramic view of the sea and the city; and the Naval Museum, which shows the history and technology of the Italian navy. La Spezia also has a rich gastronomy, based on sea and land products, such as fish, pesto, focaccia and wine. Furthermore, the port of Spezia is a stopover for cruise ships that sail through the Mediterranean precisely due to its proximity to the cities of Pisa and Florence.
