Travel guide of 5 days. Car route through Gran Canaria

Day 1:

Arrival in Gran Canaria and accommodation in the north of the island

On your first day in Gran Canaria, after landing on the island, you can pick up your rental car at the airport offices and start your holidays in the Canary Islands. For today, nothing better than arriving at your hotel, unpacking and having a cocktail in one of the bars of your resort. If you arrive with enough time, you can also take the opportunity to visit the capital of the island: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria you will find the Benito Pérez Galdós House-Museum, on Calle Mayor de Triana and, walking through the Vegueta neighborhood, the Casa de Colón, the Cathedral and the market. To continue, nothing better than discovering Las Canteras beach, one of the best urban beaches in the world with a great seabed. If you prefer, you can also leave this visit for your return day as it is close to Las Palmas airport. You decide!

Sand nativity scene on Las Canteras beach, Gran Canaria, Spain

The Bethlehem of Las Canteras beach

Every year several national and international artists create a giant sand nativity scene on Las Canteras beach. An authentic ephemeral work of art that recreates the birth of Jesus in Canarian style. If you travel during the Christmas season, you cannot miss it.

Day 2:

Dunes of Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas lighthouse and Meloneras

Undoubtedly, theMaspalomas Dunes is one of the most impressive places in Gran Canaria that transports you to a landscape that could well be the Sahara desert itself. Of course, behind these dunes you will find the Playa del Inglés which borders on Maspalomas beach. So you can get an idea of how special this place is... Take the opportunity to visit the dunes, do somersaults, photos, videos... Then, go to the beach and take a dip or relax in the sun. On Playa del Inglés you will find a beach bar where you can have a cool drink, a nudist area and another more familiar area (just to avoid surprises…). In the afternoon, you can take a walk through the Meloneras area full of shops, bars and restaurants with sea views. If you feel like dining out, this area is perfect for spending a pleasant evening, but first, don't miss the sunset at the Maspalomas lighthouse, right next to Meloneras.

Tips for visiting the Dunes of Maspalomas

  • To get to the Dunes of Maspalomas you will have to park your car and enter from one side of the Riu Maspalomas hotel, you do not need to be staying there, the entrance is free. Crossing this hotel you will find probably the most spectacular landscape in Gran Canaria.
  • To prevent the sand from the dunes from bothering your face and getting into your mouth or nose, we recommend that you bring a scarf or shawl to cover your face with, especially on days of more wind.
  • Remember to bring your swimsuit and a towel because at the end of the dunes you will run into Playa del Inglés, where you can sunbathe and take a dip.

Day 3:

Barranco de las Vacas, Bufadero de La garita, Caldera de Los Marteles and Roque Nublo

Start the day visiting the Barranco de las Vacas, an impressive canyon that has become a tourist attraction. If you visit it early in the morning, you will avoid crowds of cars and people taking photos. Then, continue to El Bufadero de La Garita where you can see how the water hits the rocks with force and rises and falls like a geyser. To finish, the icing on the cake: the viewpoint of Roque Nublo, the image of Gran Canaria. Getting there is easy since there is a parking lot enabled and you just have to follow a simple path of about five minutes walking. On the way to the viewpoint, you will pass through the beautiful municipality of Telde, where you can stop for a snack, and through the Mirador Caldera de Los Marteles, where you can stop with your car. The views are spectacular and they don't mean any detour on your route so you can't miss it. If you have time and feel like it, you can also stop at the Mirador del Pico de los Pozos de las Nieves to contemplate one of the best sunsets on the island.

How to get to the Barranco de las Vacas

To get to the Barranco de las Vacas you can only do it by car since there is no public transport to get there. If you search for the name as it is on Google Maps, you will not reach the destination. To get there you have to take the GC-550 road and stop at kilometer 14 or search Google Maps for “Tobas de Colores del Barranco de las Vacas”. You'll know you've arrived when you see a curving stone bridge under the road. Leave the car on the shoulder, where it least bothers because there is no expressly enabled parking. You will see other cars so leave it where they are.  The site is limited so it is better if you visit it during the week and in the morning. The advantage is that the canyon, although spectacular, is easily covered so it will not take long to take the place of another traveler.

Once you park, head to the ravine along a dirt road that starts from the main road and in about 5 minutes you will have reached your destination. The path is easy but it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes so as not to slip on the ground.

Hiking through the Roque Nublo

If you are not satisfied with the Roque Nublo viewpoint and want to climb up to this sacred rock, you can do it by a simple path of no more than 30 minutes. The trail begins on the side of the GC-600 road, in front of the free car park where you can leave your car. The road, although easy, is on a slope. Along the way you will find signs that will guide you so that the route cannot be lost. If you dare to carry out this small excursion, we advise you to avoid the strongest hours of sun.

Day 4:

Anfi del Mar beach, Amadores beach, Puerto Rico beach and Puerto Mogán

We're going on a beach route! You can start at Anfi del Mar beach and continue along Puerto Rico beach and Amadores, one next to the other. These beaches are protected by several dikes to avoid the strong waves of the Atlantic, which allows you to enjoy the sea in peace. Without a doubt, if you travel with children, they are the best options. Its white sand and turquoise waters will make you spend a fantastic day. In the afternoon, you can visit Puerto Mogán, a charming and lively fishing village. If you prefer, at noon you can come and eat at one of the restaurants in this seaport where you will find better gastronomic options than on the beaches of Amadores and Puerto Rico. If you like fresh fish, this is your place!

What will you see today?

Gofio escaldado, typical dish of the Canary Islands, Spain

Typical dishes of Gran Canaria

  • Scalded gofio
  • "Ropa vieja"
  • "Sancocho"
  • Watercress stew
  • Stewed goat meat
  • Rabbit in salmorejo
  • "Vieja" (a type of fish) with "papas arrugadas"

Day 5:

Farewell to Gran Canaria and return home

All good things come to an end and it's time to go home... But this isn't goodbye, it's a see you soon, so think on the positive side: there's less left for the next vacation! Remember to be with a minimum of 2 hours at the airport so that you have enough time to return the car and go through the security control. In high season there can be a lot of passengers and it is better to avoid mishaps.
