Ponferrada is the capital of the El Bierzo region, in the province of León , Castile and León. Located in a fertile valley surrounded by mountains, the city has historically been an important commercial center and a prominent stop on the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James ), which has profoundly shaped its cultural and historical development.

Its most emblematic monument is the Templar Castle , an imposing medieval fortress built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Erected by the Knights Templar to protect pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, it is one of the best-preserved castles in Spain and the city's main symbol.

The historic center of Ponferrada is home to buildings of great interest, such as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Oak , patron saint of El Bierzo, the Clock Tower and numerous traditional streets that preserve the atmosphere of an old Jacobean city.

The city is also an excellent gateway to discovering the attractions of the Bierzo region, including Las Médulas , an ancient Roman mining complex declared a World Heritage Site, as well as its vineyards, historic villages and natural spaces.
