Nara

Nara is one of Japan's oldest and most spiritual cities , located in the Kansai region and the former capital of the country during the Nara period (710–794) . Considered the cradle of Japanese civilization , it preserves an exceptional collection of temples, shrines, and historical landscapes that offer insight into the cultural and religious origins of classical Japan, all within a city of a peaceful scale and easily accessible from Kyoto and Osaka .

The heart of the city is Nara Park , a vast green space where over a thousand sika deer roam freely. These deer are considered sacred messengers of the Shinto gods and have become one of the city's most recognizable symbols. Within and around the park are some of the country's most important monuments, most of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

The most iconic building is Tōdai-ji , an imposing Buddhist temple that houses the Great Bronze Buddha (Daibutsu) , one of the world's largest sculptures and a central image in Japanese Buddhism. Nearby is Kōfuku-ji , the former temple of the powerful Fujiwara clan, renowned for its elegant five-story pagoda. At the eastern end of the park, Kasuga Taisha Shrine stands out for its thousands of stone and bronze lanterns , lit during special festivals and surrounded by sacred woodland.

Beyond the park, Nara preserves traditional neighborhoods and temples of great historical significance. Highlights include Gango-ji , one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the country; Naramachi , the old merchant district with restored Edo-era houses; and various pagodas and gardens that enhance the city's serene atmosphere. Nara is easily explored on foot or by bicycle, which accentuates its leisurely and contemplative character.

The local cuisine reflects its austere, monastic history. Dishes such as kakinoha-zushi (sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves), chagayu (rice cooked in tea), and Miwa sōmen are traditional specialties, along with classic Japanese sweets ( wagashi ). Tranquil cafes and teahouses complete the cultural experience.

Nara also serves as a gateway to natural and spiritual landscapes. The wooded hills surrounding the city are part of ancient pilgrimage routes and sites of ascetic practices, offering gentle paths that connect temples and viewpoints. During spring , cherry blossoms transform parks and grounds; in autumn , the red foliage adds a particularly poetic dimension.

Visiting Nara is like traveling to the oldest and most essential Japan , where religion, nature, and heritage blend harmoniously. It's an essential destination for understanding the country's origins and an ideal complement to Kyoto, offering a more serene, spiritual, and deeply historical perspective on traditional Japan.
