Travel guide of Weekend in Madrid with entrance to the Prado Museum

Day 1:

From the Prado Museum to the Temple of Debod

This day starts with a visit to the Prado National Museum, ranked among the top ten in the world. This visit will take you at least 2:30h. Once you finish your visit, you will pass through the Barrio de las Letras, where some of the most important writers of the Spanish Golden Age lived, to reach the famous Puerta del Sol where you will find the statue of the Bear and the strawberry tree, the mythical poster of Tío Pepe, the clock that chimes on new year´s eve and the Km 0 plate, where all the main roads in Spanish territory begin. If lunchtime is approaching, it's a good time to eat a squid sandwich or a Madrid stew here, or do it at the next stop: Madrid's Plaza Mayor. In this square several restaurants and cafes. Continue along Calle Mayor and its centuries-old establishments and you will reach the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace, located in Plaza de Oriente. To end this day, nothing better than going to the Egyptian temple of Debod and watching the sunset. If you have time and desire you can go back to the center for dinner passing through the Plaza de España where there is also a metro stop or take the opportunity to have dinner in Madrid's Chinatown, behind the Plaza de España.

What will you see today?

Lively areas of Madrid where you can have tapas and party

In the areas of Latina, Huertas, Moncloa and Malasaña you will find many places where you can have tapas at any time of the day and where you can continue the party at night.

Hours of the Prado National Museum

The Prado Museum opens at 10am and closes at 8pm, Monday to Saturday, and at 7pm on Sundays and holidays. The last entrance to the museum is 30 minutes before closing, although we recommend that you don't leave it until the end because in 30 minutes you won't see much...

Day 2:

Discovering the most emblematic places of Madrid

To start the day, you can go for a walk around El Retiro and get on the famous rowing boats on the pond. at the end, very close, is the famous Puerta de Alcalá and the famous Fuente de la Cibeles, the site for the celebrations of Real Madrid and the Spanish national soccer and basketball team. If you keep walking you will reach Madrid's Gran Vía, the most commercial and luxurious street in the city where such emblematic buildings as the Metropolis are located. To end this day, head towards Plaza del Callao, where the building with the well-known Shweppes illuminated sign rises. Take the opportunity to go up to the eighth floor of El Corte Inglés, which is located right there. From here you can enjoy fantastic views of the city, especially at sunset. If you are looking for a place to dine and have a few drinks, Calle Huertas is the liveliest, especially on weekends.

What will you see today?

Ahuehuete, centenary tree of Madrid

The oldest tree in Madrid

Did you know that the oldest tree in Madrid is in El Retiro Park? It is an ahuehuete or bald cypress affectionately known as "the grandfather of Buen Retiro". This tree is native to Mexico and could be between 240 and 300 years old. If you want to find it, it is located on the left side of the Parterre, between the main pond and Calle de Alfonso XII, near the statue of Jacinto Benavente.

Day 3:

La Latina neighborhood, San Miguel Market and El Rastro de Madrid

If your visit coincides with a Sunday, a good plan is to go to the Madrid flea market in the morning, a fascinating antiques market. To eat, there is nothing better than trying t small dishes in the Latina neighborhood or trying the somewhat more avant-garde tapas of the modern Mercado de San Miguel, another classic of Madrid. If you have time, you can go to the beautiful Atocha Station. This station is the busiest in Spain and its architecture, together with its garden with more than 7,000 plants and 400 species, has made it a tourist destination. Next to it, stands the monument in homage to the victims of the terrorist attack of March 11, 2004. A very moving monument. Continuing with the tour, near Atocha is the CaixaForum cultural center that stands out for its facade that has an impressive vertical garden.
