The Gomeran whistle

The Gomeran whistle is an exclusive language of the island declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This language was created by the indigenous people of the island to communicate between ravines and is still preserved, although it is no longer out of necessity. The silbo gomero is a whistled form of language encoding where the vowels and consonants of Spanish are replaced by whistles: two differentiated whistles replace the five Spanish vowels; four to the consonants and through these six whistles more than 4,000 concepts can be expressed as they are distinguished by their tone and their interruption or continuity. Undoubtedly a very ingenious language created to communicate over long distances, since favorable wind conditions allow a whistle to travel up to a distance of between 3 and 4 km. The difficult orography of La Gomera, full of ravines, made it difficult to move around, so with this method and, taking into account that the island has an area of 25km, chain messages could be sent from one side of the island to the other.
