The Garajonay National Parkis located in the center of the island of La Gomera, in the Canary Islands. This park extends between 800 and 1,487 meters of altitude and houses a laurel forest, one of the few in the world that comes from the Tertiary and that populated the Mediterranean basin millions of years ago. In 1986 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, recognizing the value of the Canarian Monteverde as one of the oldest forests in Europe preserved thanks to the trade winds and the almost permanent humidity of the clouds. The fauna found in Garajonay are bats, 28 species of birds, among which birds of prey such as eagles, kestrels or sparrowhawks stand out, and endemic animals such as the rabiche pigeon, the turquoise pigeon and the giant lizard of La Gomera, the latter in serious danger of extinction. Garajonay Park is open to the public free of charge and has several trails of different distances and difficulties where you can enjoy the laurel forest, all of them well signposted. Among the points of interest in Garajonay and its surroundings are the Mirador de Abrantes, La Laguna, the Mirador de los Roques, the Mirador El Bailadero, the Mirador de Igualero, the Mirador de Alojera, the Mirador de Vallehermoso. the Chorros del Cedro and the Alto Garajonay, the highest point of La Gomera.
